Black Nights
Duo Exhibition with André Strahinja
Espacio Azul Petróleo
September 2 - September 23, 2023
“The selection of hands, glimmers, and ornaments that Javiera uses to compose The Black Nights possesses a particular delicacy. The undulating, ornamental strokes are laid out on a fabric—surely far removed from the thin and immaculate surface of the original drawings, as well as from the small and intimate format of the printed volumes. On her pieces, imbued with a conventionally feminine pink yet deliberately acidic, the images arranged by the artist emerge as parts of a particular symbolism. The hands seem to recreate expressions of a non-verbal language, one in which the fate of the universe appears to be encoded. Kabbalistic, esoteric, mystical—it doesn’t matter; they are as secretive as the private universe of consciousness—adolescent—to which the original images belong, and in the artist’s recreation, they become even more distant and, if possible, more private.
As if it were a ceremony, or the necessary emblems to carry it out. Its composition has something heraldic about it and seems to summarize the abstract influence of Hilma Af Klint’s painting with the extremely sentimental narrative of manga. They are subtly psychedelic, and the fact that they are painted on unstretched canvas reinforces the ethereal and dreamlike sensation surrounding the whole.”
